From Love's Point of View : Semester Break, a 'Heart Break'

                                                                  بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيم

I hope I am never too late for this post.

So, it is semester break again. My lecturer once said to us before, semester break is the time for us to leave aside our studies for a while and when the time comes that the break is over, we will endure this kind of longing to study. We will miss to do all the things we used to be doing but we left behind. Well, I believe everyone here is up to something. Doing attachment with law firms, conducting and attending programmes, going for vacation and what not; we all have our own plans. And surely it is the time to give our body and mind a break, it’s now the time to swing their focus to something rejuvenating and refreshing! It is a break, anyway.

Also, it’s time for a ‘heart break’.

Of course, it is not like ‘heart break’ as you think it is. ‘Heart break’ here refers to giving our heart the solitude and serenity it yearns for. It’s now the time to respond to its ‘call’, to give it a rest, to ‘feed’ it, before it can once again get on its track. And, it is Ramadan! Ramadan, the best break of all breaks, the best school of all schools. Come on people, let’s grab this opportunity and don’t screw this chance! How many times do we have Ramadan falling on the semester break? Remember, the same opportunity won’t come twice. Make full use of it to fill in the room for improvement within ourselves. Only then, we can proceed with a greater task - to define and to refine our sense of purposes and our sense of meaning in our lives. We are all here for purposes, right? Allah created us for reasons, we must have our own roles to play.

And once in a while, the time will come when all we need to do is to recover all these senses - it is the time to reflect thoroughly on a few things in our lives. We must have come to the universities on purposes and for purposes, haven’t we? Before we enter the new semester, usually we come clean with our fresh new aims and visions – we are all like a bright spark, scintillating and lively! And when the semester ends, we know better whether or not our goals are achieved and whether or not our lives are proving satisfactory. Well, we know ourselves. We know how life has treated us. Putting it clearly, we are also the ones to know if our achievement today meets our real potential.

It’s never an easy task to reach clarity about what we want in this life, it is a step-by-step process of defining and refining. Hence, this is the perfect time for us to think and reflect, and thus, to make new plans and to make some changes! You know, our time management, our study, our ikhtilat, what to do and what not to do, where to improve and why, and what not. And I see Ramadan and the semester break as the most ideal medium in doing so, they both can act as an oasis from the busyness of our lives. Let’s cleanse our heart with both ibadah fard and sunnah now – like doing taraweeh, tilawah and tadabbur Quran, i’tikaf, qiyamullail and so on – that it can then live its purposes. Salam Ramadhan and enjoy your break! <3
